ASPCA Adopt a Thon in Joplin a Huge Success

Adopt-a-Thon Helps Heal Joplin
Story Link

As you may know, the recent Adopt-a-Thon at the Joplin Humane Society was an enormous success. Thousands of people from 24 states visited our emergency shelter, and a whopping 739 animals were adopted!

The adopters included Miranda Scott and her family, who adopted a once-feral kitten, and Peggy Howe, who, along with her daughter, drove four hours from Topeka, Kansas, to rescue a puppy—though she was weak from undergoing cancer treatment.

This wonderful event never could have happened without your support. That’s why in this issue of News Alert, we’d like to thank you for what you’ve helped us accomplish—and share photos and stories from the adopt-a-thon that will have you breaking out the tissues.

It’s Fourth of July weekend; what better way to kick it off than with some heartwarming stories and photos of Americans pulling together for the animals—and people—of the Heartland?

Ruff Life Wine Tasting..National Mill Dog Rescue in Colorado Springs

Mill Rescue Wine Tasting
Link

Set your Calendars for Ruff Life Wine Tasting in Colorado Springs. When? August 5, 2011 from 6-9pm. Norris Penrose Event Center 1045 Lower Gold Camp Rd..come out for a great cause

They have been in existence since February of 2007 when Theresa rescued our founder, Lily, from Reedgate Kennels in Missouri. When Theresa got to the auction, Lily was sitting up in the back of her cage in the dark barn that she lived in. Lily was sitting on her back legs and rubbing her stomach with her front paws and looking Theresa square in the eyes and asking her for help.

Theresa knew that she couldn't leave the auction without Lily and said, "We may have come 800 miles for one dog." That wasn't the case as Lily was worn out, with a rotted jaw and mammary tumors along her entire left side. She brought 40 dollars. I wouldn't sell her for a million dollars. She's brought joy and love to my life from the day she got here.

On that day National Mill Dog Rescue began. We have pledged to put an end to the cruelty and evil of the commercial breeding industry. (Industry! Indeed.) Also more commonly known as puppy mills. We do this by educating the public about puppy mills and letting them know that buying dogs in a pet store is wrong. There are many reputable breeders and shelters from which to get dogs

Found Female White Terrier Westie Dog- Quincy/Wadsworth..Rude Owner & Bad Breeders 303-573-7912/720-323-6034

Lost Dog Get's Back To Her Home..Don't Think She Was Too Thrilled

**So I found this lovely dog this morning posted ads everywhere and was going to even put signs out for her. No collar, no chip no anything so wasn't ready to take to the shelter just yet.

**The owner Archie Garcia called and said it was his, great come pick it up. The next thing I know she didn't want to go with him, he was rude about having any information for the dog in case it got out next time and any advice I had (I operate a Stray dog rescue site and recover 3-5 dogs a year so I know a little) he proceeded to tell me off, tell me to buzz off and he didn't care!!

**Responsible dog owner...I don't think so! If you are a dog breeder Archie, which I assume you probably are, I would not have others buy dogs from you after risking the life of your dog and most importantly the puppies left behind for 24 hours while you were being so careless!!
Glad I could help save your dog thanks for being ungrateful

L.A. Pet Super Adoption, a Rookie’s Perspective-Best Friends Org

L.A. Pet Super Adoption, a Rookie’s Perspective
May 25, 2011, Story Link
By David Dickson, Best Friends staff writer

'Super' is an understatement when it comes to 284 (and counting) animals finding new homes during two-day event

Having worked as a writer at Best Friends for several years now, I’ve heard an awful lot about the L.A. Pet Super Adoption events. Yet, I’ve never actually attended. Well, this past May 21 and 22, I finally made it down, and let me tell you something: Hearing about it from afar is nothing whatsoever like being there in person.

Before heading to L.A., I had a pretty solid handle on one particular detail: This event is big. Perhaps a little perspective on the area will help. Los Angeles County is the most populated county in the United States, has been for decades. In fact, on its own, Los Angeles County has more people than 42 of the 50 states.

When you have those kind of numbers to pull from, it’s a no-brainer why there are so many castaway animals in need of homes! Sure enough, close to 1,300 animals showed up from 18 shelters and approximately 50 rescue groups, each ready to find his or her own happy ever after. I had all this in my head conceptually before heading down. So yes, I was prepared for big. Instead, I should have been prepared for massive! There’s something entirely different about seeing it with your own eyes.

Maxfund Lucky Strut Pet Fundraiser!

About Lucky Mutt Strut & MaxFund

Event Link

Who are YOU walking for?
MaxFund’s Lucky Mutt Strut June 26th, 2011

What is the Lucky Mutt Strut?
MaxFund’s Lucky Mutt Strut is our way to “Make Trax for Max!”
You’ve heard of the Furry Scurry, right? It’s the largest dog-walk in the nation. The Lucky Mutt Strut is a smaller version, but with the same idea and outcome: Raise money for homeless animals.

In this, our 15th year of the Lucky Mutt Strut, we are proud to remember our very first strut which, at that point was Rover’s Romp – not the Lucky Mutt Strut. It was a small gathering of about 50 close friends and supporters of MaxFund, Racine’s provided some wonderful brownies and we went for coffee and bagels to warm-up afterward, compliments of King Soopers. The Romp took place in Wash Park, just like today’s Lucky Mutt Strut, but we’ve grown quite a bit from our humble beginnings!

What happened on the day of Rover’s Romp was a great beginning to what happens this June 26th, 2011 when we celebrate our 15th year of strutting: we get out there and make Trax for Max!
· 2 mile walk for animal owners and lovers alike
· Celebrates MaxFund – Denver’s No-Kill Shelter
· Raises money for the kids of MaxFund
· A fun afternoon of picnicking and meeting friends, old and new
· Meeting local vendors who provide samples and information of their products and services

Why MaxFund?

In 1988 our namesake, Max, was hit by a car and suffered two broken legs. He was left by the side of the road to fend for himself. A young woman found him and brought him to the local vet where Max stayed for 10 days…no one claimed him as their own. Dr. Bill Suro, who owned a vet hospital at the time where he & his wife Nanci both worked, decided to take in Max, injured and suffering.

Max required five surgeries, and eight weeks of hospitalization. There was a lot of pain as well as weeks of physical therapy and rehab. Through all of it thought, Max never lost his amazing attitude.
A fishbowl was placed on the counter of the vet hospital with “The Max Fund” taped to it and a yard sale was held to raise money for his treatment as well. Max was a favorite of the staff and clients alike. After two months, Max was able to be discharged and was adopted by Dr. John Joseph, one of the vets who had taken great care of him during his hospitalization.
The happy ending to Max’s story was the happy beginning of the MaxFund. The money that was left over from the fish bowl and yard sale was used as the initial start-up money for the MaxFund – an organization dedicated to injured animals with no known owners (like Max).
Thanks to MaxFund, over 25,000 animals have been helped and given a true “second leash on life”!

Denver's Furry Scurry is Close! Pet Fundraiser Day at Washington Park

The Furry Scurry is this Saturday! On May 7, Washington Park will be filled with Furry Scurry fun. Register now so you don’t miss this exciting event. Stop by our sponsors' booths for fun giveaways and shop the Flealess Market for unique items for you and your pets. Not only will we have Colorado Disc Dogs and the Ruff Flyball Club in our demo ring but now there’s even more entertainment to enjoy. Live music by The Give will be in the meadow west of the Flealess Market. Bring your dog and come bark along after you’ve finished the walk.

Of course, everything that’s being planned to make the Furry Scurry the best celebration of pets and people anywhere has one main goal—to help the hundreds of cats, dogs and small critters that are at our shelters right now, waiting for happy homes. Among them are 52 dogs that we took in a few weeks ago, victims of an animal hoarder who had neglected them for years. They are getting all the love they’ve missed, plus the medical care they need to turn their lives around. Read their story here and be even more inspired to take part in the Furry Scurry, our premier fundraising event of the year.

You can register online or at our Quebec Street shelter until 5 p.m. on Friday. Registration opens at the park on event day at 7 a.m. Event Link

Denver Area Summer Dog Walking & Pet Care-Washington Park, Englewood, Littleton & Lakewood

Summer Pet Fun

Yes it's Here, Summer has officially arrived and the heat is on! The cool spring weather is gone and we can see cars sizzle, the atmosphere ripple with heat waves, and colors baked right out of signs and posters.

Temperatures are skirting with triple digits, keep a wary eye on your pets, who are just as susceptible to heat stroke and sunburn as you are.

The normal body temperature for dogs and cats is much higher than our own, between 101 and 103 degrees. Usually, their fur coats have their own cooling systems, but in this weather, sometimes that is just not good enough, said Carla Thompson, veterinarian at Paisano Animal Clinic.

Animals are more prone to heat stroke, dehydration, sunburn and dangerous negligence.

Heat stoke is the biggest problem, "and that can be fatal," Thompson said.

If your pet is overheating and is possibly in mortal danger, the animal would be panting heavily, unresponsive and hot to the touch.

The condition causes the tongue and other mucus membranes to become red and it causes the dog to be unsteady, vomit and have bloody diarrhea. Body temperature goes up to over 106 degrees and the episode can end in a coma or death. "Cats are no less at risk," Thompson said.

Patrick Life is Spared! Death Was So Close For An Abandoned Dog

Poor Patrick Found in A Trash Bin

Article Link Please sign the petition
The depths to which human depravity can sink, as illustrated by this story and gutwrenching pictures can shock even those of us who have seen the worst of the worst.

The misery, pain and callousness inflicted by humans is more than can be understood by most people. It's accepted that many people do not like animals or dogs or pit bulls in particular. However, the heartless manner in which a dying animal is tossed away like garbage is not only reprehensible but the increase that we have seen indicates a downward spiral of compassion, moral fiber and ethics. The 22 story apartment building is equipped with garbage chutes on each floor for tenants.

Someone had no more use for this dog. They had starved it to near death, put it in a garbage bag and threw it down the garbage chute. A maintenance worker cleans out the bin every few days and on Wednesday, March 16th, they were cleaning out the contents of the container to go directly into a trash compacter. The bag moved a little and the worker opened it to find a moribund dog inside -- pathetically thin, cold and near death.

Stray Dogs In Japan in Need of Assistance!

Dog in Japan stays by the side of ailing friend in the rubble
By Brett Michael Dykes
Story Link

It's a universal truth that dogs are man's best friend, but they're pretty darn loyal to their own as well. Case in point: this tear-inducing video, via the website Jezebel, showing a dog, shivering and disoriented, remaining loyally by the side of a stricken fellow canine amid the devastation of the Japanese tsunami.
LINK to an amazing Pet video if it doesn't show up below

Global Pets In Need Org...Help a few Pets homeless in Japan

The video is a stark reminder that, as was the case when Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast in 2005, there will likely be thousands of pets orphaned or involuntarily abandoned due to the catastrophe in Japan. If you'd like to help efforts to help these animals, you can find info on doing so here.

UPDATE: CNN and the UK Telegraph have both reported that the dogs have been rescued since the footage aired, and are both receiving veterinary care; the more seriously wounded dog is at a clinic in the city of Mito, while the protective spaniel-type dog is receiving care at a shelter in the same town.

Jaco & Quepos Costa Rica Stray Dogs...Help Out The Less Fortunate!

Costa Rica Vacation and Stray Dogs

I recently returned from another great trip to Costa Rica and plenty of fun! With all that fun came a few unpleasant surprises, that being of how many stray dogs I encountered roaming the streets of Jaco and Manuel Antonio Costa Rica.

Stray dogs are nothing new to most people but in an area where they roam all over, many have been hit from all the crazy drivers, this makes these strays some of the toughest I've ever encountered.

Metro Denver Washington Park, Cherry Creek, Lowry, Dog Walking Pet Care! Spring Discounts

Spring is Almost Here
Denverdaawg Website

It's that time again with Spring right around the corner and weekend trips that Denverdaawg can help! Whether it's daily dog walking, weekend Pet care or anything else pet related give us a call.

Why do I need a Pet Sitter or Dog Walker? If you are like most working Americans you are low on time and high on tasks. You might put in long hours at the office. This shortens the amount of time you spend engaging in dog walking with your best canine friend every day. Different dog breeds have different daily exercise requirements, so your pooch might need extensive dog walking or run in the middle of the day to keep from Behavior issues. How can you take your dog walking and be at work at the same time? You can hire a dog walker to be your dog walking replacement while you are at work. Often times a dog walker is more then just a necessity because many dogs that have limited dog walking time become irritable. Dogs need to have daily exercise and human connection through dog walking. This lack of exercise has let excess energy build up and can make your loving pet a little less loving.

If Denverdaawg can help with any of your Pet care services this Spring don't hesitate to contact us. We will be around on weekends as well as during the week to help anyway we can so call us! Feel free to read more about Denverdaawg, Behavior Issues, Dog Parks, Top Pet Sites to help and most popular. Big News!

UGA VIII Passes, One Great Bulldog!

ATHENS – Uga VIII died Friday, at not quite 17 months old and after only a half-season as the University of Georgia mascot.

The white English bulldog was diagnosed early last month with lymphoma, a common cancer in dogs.

“We all mourn the loss of Uga VIII, and our thoughts and prayers are with the Seiler family at this time,” said Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity, referring to the Frank W. “Sonny” Seiler family of Savannah, long-time owners of the Uga line of mascots.

Uga VIII, born Sept. 12, 2009, took over as the Bulldogs’ mascot at the Oct. 16, 2010, homecoming football game against Vanderbilt in Sanford Stadium. He served for the final six games of the regular season but did not travel to Memphis for the Liberty Bowl because of what was thought at the time to be a gastrointestinal condition

Best Friend's Animal Society "Squeker and Oscar"

Squeaker and Oscar

January 10, 2011 : 4:37 PM ET
By Sandy Miller
Story Link

Squeaker and Oscar couldn’t have been more different when they arrived at Best Friends. But today, they’re the best of friends. And that friendship has helped them heal.

Squeaker wasn’t quite as frightened of people as a lot of the other Vicktory dogs, but it still took time for her to completely trust them.
“Now, Squeaker loves everyone,” says Dogtown caregiver Betsy Kidder. “She has little to no hesitation when approaching people. She will pull on her leash, tail-a-wagging and run up to people.”

Kidder says Squeaker will even plop down on her back, asking for a belly rub. What a difference a little time and a whole lot of love and attention can make!

Oscar, on the other hand, was absolutely terrified of people when he first came to the Sanctuary in 2008.

“He would hang in the back of his run until the caregivers left,” says Kidder. “At night, Oscar was one of the dogs that we had to crawl in the crate to get out for walks.”

Talk about a guy who’s come a long way.
“He follows you around and will wag his tail and play-bow and then run from you,” Kidder says. “Then he’ll approach you and let you give him pets. He’s adorable!”

Oscar was the first of the Vicktory dogs to earn his Canine Good Citizen certification.

“That’s a huge milestone in my book,” Kidder says.

Kidder credits Squeaker with helping to bring Oscar even further out of his shell. Squeaker and Oscar have become such good friends that they now share the same run.

“Squeaker spent a lot of time in the clinic laundry before moving to a dog run,” Kidder says.

“She got a lot of interaction with people, and I think she has motivated Oscar to be less fearful. The two of them love each other. They play really hard and frolic around their run together. When they’re not playing, they’re often lying next to each other under the shade units.”

Both Squeaker and Oscar have discovered that people aren’t so bad after all.

“Today, both of them are excited to see you in the morning,” Kidder says.

Denver Fly Fishing Show & ISE International Sportsman Expo is Here!

What's Your Pleasure?
Fly Fishing Shows RecapLink

Happy New Year to all my fishing addicts out there and I hope you enjoyed the Holidays either dreaming of fly fishing, or better yet, entertaining oneself hopefully out on the water.

It's that time of year again when the weather turns cold, snow is falling and thoughts of a much needed escape soon takes over. Most are back to work this week and I can only imagine how much work is getting done, or lack of that is and computer screens are suddenly filled with Fly fishing videos as well as upcoming Fly Fishing shows to attend.

January kicks off Colorado's season for Fly Fishing shows and it couldn't have come any sooner! Just the thought of spending my weekends stuck inside working, outside shoveling snow or down in my man cave fly fishing room cleaning up has me excited to attend anything fly fishing related.

One problem that keeps showing its ugly head, and yes it's an ugly one is The Fact that we have to shows the exact same weekend to attend. Most fisherman and addicts would only be too happy to have this late Christmas present arrive, myself not so fast!

When is it ever a good thing to have two fly fishing shows compete with one another especially the Powerhouse of the ISE to make their 2nd annual show the same time as the Industry's favorite "The Fly Fishing Show?" Now this I'm sure will be a topic worth discussing for quite some time and I'm all for it but when I'm friend's with the guy who has been putting together the Denver Fly Fishing Show (also the MA/NJ/PA/NC and California shows) I have noticed a bailout of sorts with companies, speakers and attendees. Last year it was not a good site to see the show not as crowded as years before and also the vendors who normally attend with great regards found themselves making a difficult decision to go with the ISE. I do not fault the vendors or companies at all, you have to go where the business is so it's just the organizers of the ISE I have a problem with. I fault the ISE for once again trying to shove out the Fly Fishing Show for their own personal gains and to dominate an open Industry that needs all that it can get to survive.

If you want to attend the ISE International Sportsman Show that's cool and I will be there as well (one of my 3 days split between the 2 shows) and I'm looking forward to it. I have many friends speaking and attending this great show as well I just do not agree with the way this was scheduled and hope that they are able to change things next year, as was told to me last year due to a ski show conflict, this year not so much.

One thing is for certain, you can get your fill at either show and if you're lucky enough, attend both shows and support both causes.
