Holiday Pet's In Need! Colorado Pet's and Shelters To Help

Yes This is a Joyous Time Of Year For Many, But For Unfortunate Pets, Not So Much

Many of you know that I am a huge advocate for helping Pets in need. Whether helping local organizations, getting involved in national campaigns or as the case for this past year, the proud parent of a local stray. This is not my soapbox by any means, simply a small voice amongst many that care about unfortunate pets out there in need. Every year shelters euthanize millions of homeless pets. In the USA alone, more than five million cats, and two million dogs are euthanized every year as unwanted pets.

Whether you decide to do something depends on you, most of my friends and many fishing pals all have dogs so they know what it means to have and care about a pet. Everything counts and even a small token during the Holidays goes a long way. If you are thinking about adopting, now is the time of year and if possible, bypass a breeder for loving pet from one of your local shelters.

Here is some information for those interested:
For their 11th year in a row, Iams is again partnering with animal shelters during their annual Iams Home 4 the Holidays. Their goal is to help 1.5 MILLION orphaned pets find their forever homes from Oct. 1, 2009 to Jan. 4, 2010.

In fact, Morris Animal Foundation (MAF) is the world's largest nonprofit foundation 501(c)(3) dedicated to funding research studies to protect, treat and cure animals. By funding more than 100 canine cancer studies, we've tacked the no. 1 killer of dogs and helped veterinarians better detect and treat the disease. Our Canine Cancer Campaign is a global effort to prevent, treat and cure cancer. I'm friend's with the CEO of MAF so I care deeply about this organization.

At the sanctuary from The Best Friends Animal Sanctuary at Angel Canyon, at the heart of the Golden Circle of national parks in southern Utah, is home on any given day to about 2,000 dogs, cats, and other animals, who come from shelters and rescue groups around the country for special care they can only receive at Best Friends. Many people know about Best Friends from their rescue of the Michael Vick dogs and from their show on TV.

Colorado Pets and News!

Link
Dear Members and Friends, Competitions are heating up! Nine of the sanctuary’s “Purrty Dozen” have found homes —congratulations, Lois, you’re number nine! The race is on to see who will be the next to go. Plus, the Best Friends animals are holding their breath to see if they can win the America’s Favorite Animal Shelter contest. And much more friendly rivalry, all on this week’s website.

Lois goes home!
Can it be? The cat who used to swat everybody who passed by? It’s true. The ninth cat in the “Purrty Dozen” — the ones Best Friends sanctuary caregivers felt most needed homes — has finally met her match and her forever home.

>> Check it out!
Network Charities
It’s simple. Rescue groups all across the country set up mini-websites for free on the Best Friends Network. Find one you like and make a donation. And for a limited time, Best Friends matches that donation! Why? Because we want to support the work of people who rescue animals.

>> Come participate!
Hurrying home
Two little puppy mill survivors find wonderful homes after catching a ride with Best Friends’ Pup My Ride — a lifesaver for animals in a hurry to start their new lives.

>> Read their happy-ever-afters.
Vote for Best Friends!
And the animals could get $10,000. Thanks to Care2 and Adopt-a-Pet.com, all it takes is one click. And no matter who you vote for, you’re doing a good deed!

>> Learn more.
And as always, there's lots more on the website this week, including:
Here’s what you need to know about H1N1 (Swine) Flu and your pets.
Find out how a Best Friends’ Vicktory dog inspired a novel!
Check out the T-shirts that help take a bite out of puppy mills.
Of course, competitions like the one among the Purrty Dozen cats are all in good fun. The message of the new Network Charities program is that no animal (and no one who helps animals) is ever truly in competition — we’re all absolutely on the same side as we race together toward a time where every animal has a loving home and there are No More Homeless Pets.

Denver Labs Need Adoption Soon

Local Denver Labs Annie and Nikki Need A Good Home

Nikki and Annie lost their home and family due to foreclosure. Now they are about to lose their foster home. However, they still have not lost their zest for life and hope for a new family. The girls are eleven years old and have a clean bill of health. Senior canines have much to offer and are easily assimilated into the family. These two are great with other dogs and children as well. Sometimes they share a crate at night, or they sleep with their foster dad on his futon. Nikki loves to engage people with her tug of war toy or a leisurely game of fetch. Annie is gentle, warm and friendly. These two are easy keepers. They are housebroken, not destructive and are eager to please. To find out more about them please contact Beth at 303-333-2291.

Bulldogs R Us..Complaints Everywhere!

Bulldogs R Us Is Not A Breeder To Use!
Story from Rescue Ink
Complaint Forums About Them

There have been a ton of complaints regarding this business as well as the practices they are involved in. Cases are listed all throughout the internet as to the complaints.

Main complaints have been that they have sold them pets with Parvo, disease ridden pets and what more is the less compassion Robin from Bulldogs R Us has about the pets she has sold and will not return any pets you purchase from them

DO YOU REALLY WANT TO BUY A PET FROM THEM KNOWING THERE COULD BE SOMETHING WRONG AND THAT SHE WILL NOT REFUND THEM IF IT'S PROVEN BY LOCAL VETS....I DON'T THINK SO!!!

On a recent forum where a pet owner lost there pet due to an illness it derived from this breeder Robin told the owner it was her fault and she killed the dog. No compassion and Robin, as well as Bulldogs R Us is NOT a business you should buy from!

Do your homeowork if using a breeder and have them checked out by a vet 1st, get a health certificate by the breeder and most important GET A REFUND POLICY if needed from them.

Bringing New Life To Dog Shelter

Bringing New Life To Dog Shelter
PAWS Website

PUEBLO - The Animal Welfare and Protection Society is looking to make its mark by building a one of a kind facility in the Steel City. The shelter's plan is to build the only non-profit, no kill, Platinum LEED Certified Shelter in North America. The minute you take a look inside the current facility, it's no secret; the thirty-year-old facility is ready for a face-lift. "Definitely time for an upgrade," said Beverly Kachel, President of the Pueblo Animal Welfare Society or ‘PAWS'.

The non-profit shelter houses on average about 50 dogs, but because they are a no kill shelter, space is extremely important. The new building will be able to house at least 150 dogs and cats.
"We've been here for about thirty years and I think were one of Pueblo's best kept secrets and we sure do want to change that," said Kachel.
Their plan is to go big...really big.

‘PAWS' is going to turn their current run-down shelter into a state of the art, platinum LEED certified building. That means it will be built completely green. "We will provide heating and cooling through a geo-thermal field," said Clyde Young, the Building Committee Chairman for ‘PAWS'. "We will provide energy through solar panels...we want to preserve the environment, it's good for the dogs, good for the cats, good for the people and good for the planet," he added.

The plan is to build the facility in several phases. The first one will include the shelter itself, after that they have a plan to build a do park, agility course, doggy day-care, and an emergency vet clinic. All in all, it would help create at least 50 new jobs in Pueblo. "It's something that Pueblo can be proud of," said Young. But in order to make it all happen, they still need help from the community. "From the community, we'd like to have your support, your monetary support, your physical support, we can always use volunteers," said Kachel. The total cost of the facility is estimated at around $7.7 million. So far, the Pueblo Animal Welfare and Protection Society has saved about $1.7 million. That means they are still about $6 million short of their goal.

Board members for ‘PAWS' say that they have been applying for several government grants and are looking for business sponsorships as well to help raise money. If you would like to donate your time, money, or supplies to the shelter you can find information on their website on how to do so

Stapleton and Lowry Summertime Holiday Pet Care

Pet Care During The Summertime!

Our pets need the best care we can give. Their lives depend on us. Here are some pet care tips you can use with your animal friends.Since dogs are the most common house pet, let us start with them. When it comes to dog pet care you should consider comfort and amusement. Dogs love to play and they love to run. So before you even decide to buy a dog you should take into consideration the place where you and your dog can play. They are a very social animal that’s why if possible you should provide a place for them to have fun with you and your family. Dogs also like comfort, so as the owner you should provide a comfortable space for them to sleep and relax. When it comes to feeding your dog you have two options. One, is you can buy dog foods available in the market. Most dog foods already include all the daily vitamins that the dog will need. Second option is to feed him real food from your home. Dogs as we all know love to chew on chicken bones, but that shouldn’t be the only thing you give them. You can also add chicken meat, vegetables and boiled rice. You should also ask your veterinarian regarding the vitamins or supplements that your dog needs. Just like humans they also have daily requirements of calcium, and other vitamins. Lastly, for dogs and all other animals vaccination is needed. This is to prevent them to be able to protect them from disease. Better to do this while they are still young. Just like humans they can also get sick. Some of the most common sickness among dogs are the following: Vomiting and diarrhea, blood in urine and itching and scratching due to skin infection. These can all be prevented if they are properly given vaccines.Another common house pet are fishes.

Pet care for fishes is very meticulous. Before you even bring home your fish you should be able to prepare the aquarium that the fish will be living in. The water inside the aquarium should be treated. You should put water inside the tank and allow it to settle for a few days then add rocks and you can now run the filter and the air pump. Now that the aquarium is ready you can now put your fish there. Feeding them is another part of pet care. Fish food that can be purchased commercially should be approved by the vet. And you should also carefully read the back label first before you feed it to your fish. Fish shouldn’t be fed just about anything that you think you like. They have a special need that’s why it’s best to consult the vet first. All in all pet care is a big responsibility because another life is in our hands. But you are not alone. You have your veterinarians that can help you and can give the best answers to your questions.

Denver Holiday's With Pets

The 4th isn’t fun for everyone; tips for protecting your pet

Although the Fourth of July may be an exciting time for you and your family, the celebration can often be a frightening experience for your pets. Animals can be easily startled by loud noises and may start responding in ways that are not normal to their typical behavior. Some pets may go to any means necessary to escape this uncomfortable situation and may even start being destructive. Here are a few rules to follow that Maricopa County Animal Care and Control recommends:- Keep your pets inside. - If you leave your pets outdoors, the loud noises could cause them to try to escape by either digging under or jumping over a fence. Also, if a dog is tied up outside, it could strangle itself while attempting to get away. - It is best to keep your pets in a safe room, preferably without windows and leave something on like a fan, television or radio to help cover up some of the noise.- Do not bring your pets to a fireworks display or leave them in the car. "More animals are lost Fourth of July weekend than any other time of year," Chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Max Wilson said. "If animals are left outdoors, they might get anxious and run away."To prevent the permanent loss of your pet, make sure that your dog or cat is always wearing a fitting collar with either a dog license or identification tag attached to it. If you do lose your pet, visit both of MCACC Centers located at 2500 South 27th Ave. in Phoenix between Lower Buckeye Road and Durango Street and 2630 West 8th St. in Mesa near Price Road.

Myth 5: Tail-wagging means a dog is friendly

Myth 5: Tail-wagging means a dog is friendly
Don’t count on it. Tail wags have lots of different meanings, some friendly and some not.
“You have to look at the body posture of the animal and everything else it’s doing,” says veterinary behaviorist Melissa Bain, chief of the clinical animal behavior service at the University of California at Davis. “How is the tail wagging? Stiffly, tucked and wagging, nice and flowing, is the whole body wagging? That all has to be taken into consideration.”

Some signals to consider:*Relaxed, comfortable dogs generally have a gently wagging tail held horizontally or slightly lowered. *Confident dogs carry their tails up. *Dogs with their tails down may be stalking prey, feeling cautious or indicating friendliness and respect to the one they’re greeting. *Together with a lowered head, direct stare, closed mouth, ears held back and eyes wide open, a lowered tail is a clear warning to back off. *A tucked tail indicates anxiety, avoidance or caution.

Myth 4: Bad breath is normal

Denver's Premiere Dog Walking and Pet Care! Metro Denver Dog walking and pet care for Stapleton, Lowry, Capitil Hill, Park Hill and Cherry Creek!

Myth 4: Bad breath is normal
A healthy pet has fresh breath. Just as in people, bad breath is a sign of a serious health problem.

“Periodontal disease is the number one most commonly diagnosed problem in veterinary medicine,” Dr. Becker says. “By having good oral health, pets can live up to 15 percent longer, which is an average of two years.”
Brush your pet’s teeth regularly, making sure to use a toothpaste that's intended for your dog or cat. Daily is best, but even weekly is better than nothing.

Myth 3: Dogs and cats eat grass when they're sick

Denver's Premiere Dog Walking and Pet Care! Metro Denver Dog walking and pet care for Stapleton, Lowry, Capitil Hill, Park Hill and Cherry Creek!

Myth 3: Dogs and cats eat grass when they're sick
Nope, they’re just connoisseurs of the green stuff, says Marty Becker, DVM, author with Gina Spadafori of “The Ultimate Dog Lover” and “The Ultimate Cat Lover.”
“They love the taste and texture of grass,” he says. “The newer shoots with a little water on them from the sprinklers or rain is even better.”
He adds, however, that sometimes dogs will consume large amounts of grass, which then propels food through the intestinal system, either back up or out the other end, so that may be the source of the belief.

Myths, Your Cat Hates Your Baby!

Denver's Premiere Dog Walking and Pet Care! Metro Denver Dog walking and pet care for Stapleton, Lowry, Capitil Hill, Park Hill and Cherry Creek!

Myth 2: Your cat hates your baby
The rumor that Dr. Brazelton helped repopularize goes like this: Families with infants should get rid of their cats because the animals will harm the baby by sucking its breath or lying on it and smothering it.
But experts say this tale probably began because cats, attracted to soft, warm bedding, probably curled up near babies who died from other causes. Because they were found near the babies, the cats got the blame for the death.
“I tell my clients that millions of women for thousands of years have had healthy babies and lived with cats,” says feline veterinary specialist Elaine Wexler-Mitchell of Orange, Calif. “I think the only danger of a cat around a baby is that cats like to snuggle next to warm things in small areas, and a cat will not know if this position is dangerous for the baby.”
She advises keeping cats out of the room where the baby sleeps. If the cat is used to spending time in that room, start restricting its access at least a month before delivery, and don’t allow it to nap in the bassinet.
“Most cats stay away from babies, especially when the baby first comes home,” Wexler-Mitchell says. “They are scared of the crying and the changes in the home environment."
She recommends letting interaction between cat and baby occur naturally, under supervision. Never leave babies unattended in the presence of cats or dogs, and give pets plenty of attention away from the baby so they don’t feel abandoned.

Never Give Pets People Food!

Denver's Premiere Dog Walking and Pet Care! Metro Denver Dog walking and pet care for Stapleton, Lowry, Capitil Hill, Park Hill and Cherry Creek!

Myth 1: Never give pets 'people food'
When it comes to pizza, Kung Pao chicken and onion rings, it’s true; you shouldn’t be sharing high-fat, spicy or potentially toxic foods with your pet. But cantaloupe, crunchy raw or lightly steamed vegetables, and meat with fat and gristle trimmed off are favorites of many animals and shouldn’t be off limits. For instance, baby carrots, apples and popcorn are excellent low-calorie treats for dogs. And as long as you’re using high-quality ingredients and a good recipe that meets a pet’s nutritional needs, “people food” is perfectly healthy as a regular meal for your dog or cat.
“The biggest concern with feeding (pets) ‘people food’ is that most people feed too much and create an unbalanced or incomplete diet,” says veterinary nutritionist Sally Perea, who is a co-owner of Davis Veterinary Medical Consulting in Davis, Calif., and senior nutritionist for Natura Pet Products. “As a rule, treats or human foods fed to a pet on a commercial diet should be limited to no more than 10 percent of their daily calories.”
Of course, there are some foods you should never feed your pets. Find a list here.
But feeding a dog or cat from the table? That's definitely a no-no, experts agree. It takes only one time to create an obnoxious beggar.

Looking for Denver Dog Parks click on me, or off leash areas look no further Statistics show that 1 in 3 families own a Pet, well here in Colorado I have to think that number jumps to every other family! Denver has been voted many years running the Top city in the U.S. to own a Pet and I believe it. The question is how to better improve your Pet's behavior, health or well being...that's where I come in .

Denverdaawg is Here To Make Your Life Easier!

Why do I need a Pet Sitter or Dog Walker? If you are like most working Americans you are low on time and high on tasks. You might put in long hours at the office. This shortens the amount of time you spend engaging in dog walking with your best canine friend every day. Different dog breeds have different daily exercise requirements, so your pooch might need extensive dog walking or run in the middle of the day to keep from Behavior issues. How can you take your dog walking and be at work at the same time? You can hire a dog walker to be your dog walking replacement while you are at work. Often times a dog walker is more then just a necessity because many dogs that have limited dog walking time become irritable. Dogs need to have daily exercise and human connection through dog walking. This lack of exercise has let excess energy build up and can make your loving pet a little less loving.

Wild Pet Statistics!

Although most people are aware that there are more dogs and cats being born than there are people willing to adopt them -- the actual number of unwanted dogs and cats is staggering. For example, did you know:
A..An estimated 52 million dogs and 57 million cats live with U.S. families.
b.. For every human born, 7 puppies and kittens are born
.c.. One female cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 cats in 7 years.
d.. One female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in 6 years.
e.. More than 12 million dogs and cats are euthanized in shelters each year. Millions more are abandoned in rural and urban areas
.f.. As many as 25% of dogs entering shelters each year are purebreds
.g.. Approximately 61% of all dogs entering shelters are killed.
h.. Approximately 75% of all cats entering shelters are killed.
i.. It costs approximately $100 to capture, house, feed, and eventually kill each stray animal -- a cost which you, the taxpayer, eventually pay.
